The Nutrition Weight Loss Secret - The Thermogenic Effect of Food

Thermogenesis, or the "Thermogenic Effect", is the heat-producing effect of calories consumed from food. In other words, when your body digests the food that you eat, it produces heat in the body that temporarily increases your metabolism. In fact, it is this heat produced that facilitates the very digestion of that food, and in turn, provides you the greatest degree of nutrition weight loss and other health benefits per quantity of food eaten.
A calorie is actually a measurement of a unit of heat. And heat is a measurement of energy. Digesting food and properly absorbing it for nutrition weight loss and general health requires energy, which requires heat, which is measured in calories.
But not all calories are built alike.
Some calories are more available to the body for easy digestion through the production of heat than others. By the same token, some calories require more energy to digest than others.
An Easy Example: Chew Your Food!
For a familiar example, the more your chew your food, converting it from a solid mass into a more liquefied mush, the more available those calories become and thus the easier they are to convert to heat (or energy) for easy digestion. Who hasn't had the experience of inadequately chewing their food, only to later suffer bloating and/or indigestion?
Which Calories Are More Thermogenically Available Than Others?
The easiest macronutrient for reaping the most nutrition weight loss and other health benefits for the least amount of food eaten is protein. An average of 27% of the calories consumed as protein are converted to heat to be utilized in the digestion of that protein.
Meanwhile, 7% of the calories consumed in the form of carbohydrates are converted into heat energy for use in the metabolic processes of digestion and absorption. That means not as much energy is produced by eating carbohydrates as by proteins, and therefore it requires the body draw on various other energy sources (like exercise) to get the job done, or else it won't get done at all.
Keep that in mind as we look at the last-and worst-macronutrient in terms of thermogenesis, and that is fats, which only convert 3% of their calories into energy for use in digestion and absorption. That means a body must find 97% of the energy it uses to digest and absorb those fats from other sources. And what happens if it doesn't?
Why is Knowledge of the Thermogenic Effect Important For Nutrition Weight Loss and General Health?
The answer to this question is simple. Because what do you think happens to those other calories not used in the thermogenic process (in other words: not converted to heat for use as metabolic energy)? Some of it gets digested-yes-its nutrients absorbed into the bloodstream.
But the rest is either eliminated as waste (leading the body to crave more food to meet its nutritional needs) or stored as fat. Either way, this contributes to all that unwanted weight gain. The more calories not used in the thermogenic effect, the likelier that some of the remaining calories in that food-whatever it is-will show up on your belly, thighs, hips, cheeks, or wherever it is that your body typically and most easily puts on weight.
It's About More Than Macronutrients - Thermogenesis is Also About Eating Patterns
The more food your body takes in at once, the harder it is to convert any part of that food into heat for digestion and absorption. So the more you eat at once the harder it is to produce and sustain an appropriate metabolic rate for proper nutrition weight loss and general health. That's why it is always recommended that you eat several smaller meals throughout the day rather just one or two large meals. In this way, you can actually eat more and still wind up weighing less!

10 Easy Nutrition Tips For Weight Loss

Nutrition experts and professional dieticians have their own favorite weight loss tips. Here is a compilation of ten easy nutrition tips for weight loss from nutrition experts and dieticians.
1. Eat Often!
Although this might sound counterintuitive, eating more often will help you lose weight. In fact, never go without food for more that 3 to 4 hours. Eat small quantities more frequently to keep hunger down. Eat small portions of protein- and fiber-rich foods throughout the day. Or else, eat a protein-rich snack or fruits between meals so that it reduces your food intake during mealtime.
2. Eat Whole Foods More
Whole foods take longer to digest and therefore make you feel full for a longer period of time. Reduce your intake of processed foods which often leave you feeling hungry again.
3. Never Ever Give Up Your Favorite Foods
Enjoy the foods that you love, but have smaller portions of them. When you learn to limit your intake, you can eat whatever you like and still stay thin. In one sense, you can eat your cake and have it too!
4. No Late-Night Eating Please
Your body needs time to digest your supper before you go to bed. Eating late at night does not allow the body enough time to do its work. The closer you are to bedtime, the lighter you need to eat. Having a heavy meal and then heading straight to bed could mean disaster for your weight loss initiatives.
5. Check Your Weight Often
You would stay on track if you had a good idea of how much you weighed. Take weight measurements periodically and make modifications to your intake accordingly.
6. Fill It With Fruits
If a smaller portion of desert looks pathetically small, add more fruits to it to build up volume. You can have half a cup of ice cream with a full cup of fruits, instead of filling the whole quantity with ice cream alone. This will help you cut more than 200 - 300 calories.
7. Exercise for The Right Reasons
Do not exercise to make you feel hungry, so that you can eat more. Most people will eat back all the calories that they burn in the gym. Eat a small protein-carb snack before or after your workout so that you don't overeat during mealtime. Also keep yourself hydrated adequately.
8. Rest Well
When you sleep well through the night, the urge to overeat is diminished. Sleep for at least 8 hours a day. That would also leave you with less hours for eating over a 24 hour period.
9. Shrink Your Portion
Switch to nine-inch plates so that you eat smaller portions during every meal. Use smaller cups too whenever possible. Shrinking your portion size is key to lowering your food intake, and losing weight.
10. Be Realistic
Remember that 3500 calories amount to just one pound of fat. You need to cut down so many calories to lose that one pound. So, aim at losing one or two pounds a week, so that you stay consistent over a longer period of time.
If you can practice just a few of these tips consistently, you will be well on your way towards losing weight and keeping it off permanently.

How to Design a Weight Loss Program For Hypertension, Never Diet Again

Weight Loss for Hypertension
Weight Loss is often a recommendation and even a requirement for your health when you have hypertension. The problem is, most doctors receive very little education on nutrition in their formal medical training so they refer patients to a registered dietitian or nutritionist for education. Most of these professionals are very knowledgeable, and can impart important information. However, most people are going to struggle to independently change their lifestyle and effectively lose a significant amount of weight if all they have is one or two sessions with a professional.
The most successful weight loss programs, that are effective in helping people lose weight fast and keep it off, combine three critical components; nutrition, exercise, and some form of coaching or support. "Diets" that promise weight loss with no change in eating or exercise are simply marketing gimmicks that are not based in evidence-based science and won't work.
Change In Lifestyle
You may need to come to terms with the fact that you need a change in lifestyle that has a beginning, but no end. Commit to never diet again. A weight loss program for hypertension management will be heavily focused in solid nutrition. To lose weight fast, the keys are to understand how to achieve excellent nutrition with the right amount and proportion of macronutrients (proteins, carbohydrates and fats). Protein is an essential component of the nutrition equation. Protein adds muscle and muscle increases metabolism which increases the rate at which your body burns fat. Many people who are chronic dieters have actually been starving their bodies of good nutrition and despite the fact that they are obese, their bodies are saving more and more fat because it is not getting the nutrition it needs.
Nutrition
Most adults (absent kidney disease) should have between .8 and 1 GM of protein for every pound of lean body weight. A 200 pound person with 30% body fat has 60 pounds of fat, leaving 140 pounds of lean body weight. It is often difficult to get in enough protein in through traditional food sources so undenatured whey protein supplements can boost protein intake, decrease hunger and increase weight loss. Carbohydrates should be limited to fruits and vegetables and avoid salt and sugar. Some healthy fats are good in the nutrition mix such that comes from tuna, salmon, olive oil or almonds. Remember that this is a lifestyle... so if you must have that piece of pizza or bagel or bread... then have it. But maybe just one, and make it the exception rather than the rule.
Exercise
A weight loss program for hypertension should also include exercise. 30 minutes of walking, biking or any form of low stress cardio exercise is good but add to that weight training with stationary machines or free weights to increase muscle development. You don't have to be a body builder but resistance training (lifting weights) will help you lose weight faster and make you feel and look better.
Coaching
The third component is coaching or support systems. These are available in a variety of forms from clubs, to coaches to online forums. It may just be a friend that helps keep you motivated and accountable, but everyone needs someone. Find the solution you are most comfortable with and engage with it regularly. Don't hide if you have a cheat day. Fess up and get back on program. We are all human. You won/t be perfect, but if you are consistent, you will be successful.

Simplify Nutrition to Maximize Weight Loss

When it comes to Nutrition and Diet information, things can get pretty overwhelming and confusing. It's even more so in the case of weight loss. Every "expert" seems to have a slightly different opinion about what you should, and should not be eating!
Being confused doesn't help you achieve your ideal body or better health. In fact, it can lead to a whole lot of unnecessary stress. That's why it's so important to keep it simple. A highly successful strategic approach to nutrition and weight loss is to focus on what we know builds better health.
Better health naturally results in a better body.
That's where our focus needs to be, on better health. If we're tunnel-vision focused on losing weight, we can inadvertently make choices that are actually dangerous to our health and, in turn, sabotage our weight loss efforts.
When it comes to Nutrition, The Wellness Formula shows us that we need to be adding "good stuff" (pure and sufficient choices) in order to move us toward optimal health and function... and a leaner, healthier body. These pure and sufficient choices are the ones that meet the innate requirements of our cells in order to express optimal health.
We end up with better health and a better body for life.
So what's the "good stuff"? The Circle of Health keeps it simple.
Inside the circle we find 5 simple (broadly categorized) things:
1) protein
2) fats and oils
3) vegetables (include superfoods, "greens", sea vegetables, herbs)
4) fruit (controlled consumption)
5) water
That's it! It's as simple as that! These are the 5 main "macro-nutrients" we know our cells require to be healthy. If you just made this single improvement... just ate primarily from within the Circle of Health, your health and your body would dramatically improve.
Next, we can improve upon these 5 choices by upgrading them. To do this, apply The 5 Golden Rules of Nutrition as often as possible.
1) Eat REAL food! Food that's grown, harvested, raised, caught, etc. Eat food that's in its closest-to-natural state.
2) Eat the LEAST TOXIC form of that food possible.
3) Eat FRESH food - "live" foods.
4) Eat more PLANTS!
5) Add more TRADITIONALLY PREPARED foods to your diet.
This is where the magic is. This is how to maximize our nutritional choices and our weight loss efforts.
Eating like this for as many meals and snacks as possible will not only transform your body, but it's one of the most intelligent choices you can make to create vibrant health for a lifetime!
Anytime you find yourself getting confused, overwhelmed or frustrated with conflicting Nutrition and Diet information and propaganda, come back to this. Come back to The Circle of Health and The 5 Golden Rules of Nutrition.
They're simple, they're scientific, they make good sense, and they'll get you the results you're looking for!

Weight Loss and Nutrition Are Necessary!

Proper nutrition also helps keep the process of your body functioning normally and the best part is that these vitamins taste good!Nutrition and weight loss are certainly important subjects and ones that you would love to learn all that you can and then jump in and start on your diet so that you can lose the weight you desire.Nutrition and weight loss are plausible solutions to losing those unwanted pounds. We are in the 21st century and have the luxury of liquid vitamins to keep us healthy.
Whereas a nutritious diet can rectify underlying causes of diseases and restore one to wholeness of mind and body. Once we realize the connection between a wholesome diet and good health, our food will be our medicine and maintaining good health will be a matter of making the right food choices and leading a healthy lifestyle. Try cutting 500 calories from your diet and burning 500 calories with vigorous exercise every day. The average woman will lose weight on a 1,500-calorie-per-day diet, while men can lose weight on about 1,800 calories per day. Permanent healthy weight loss requires permanent lifestyle changes
Dieters who also exercise are more likely to succeed for obvious reasons. They burn a lot more calories than sedentary dieters who attempt to lose weight without initiating a work-out program. Diets that provide less than 800 calories per day also could result in heart rhythm abnormalities, which can be fatal. Plans for diets are available everywhere and can be found in magazines to inform you on making wise decisions. Whatever weight loss program is chosen the consumer will be required to move more and eat less which can be a common misconception in overweight people wanting to lose weight.
The reason these foods are thought to be fattening is that people tend to eat large portions and add toppings such as sour cream, butter and mayonnaise, which are very high in fat. Dieters can eat smaller portions of starches flavored with herbs, spices and other low-fat toppings and still lose weight. The old cholesterol-laden version used whole eggs, full-fat whipping cream and half-and-half, and about 276 calories, 15 grams of fat, 9 grams of saturated fat and 184 milligrams of cholesterol in just one serving. Modified, this tangy dessert has only one-tenth of the fat and 100 calories fewer than the original. Confusion exists when it comes to the vast array of wrinkle creams. One important factor is read the labels.
Five ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof distilled spirits provide 100 calories. But alcohol provides few, if any, nutrients, so if you drink alcoholic beverages and want to reduce your weight, consider reducing or eliminating your alcohol intake. Vegetarian diets can provide the recommended daily amount of all the key nutrients if you choose foods carefully. Fruits and vegetables are the main ingredients in vegetarian diets. If you have questions not answered here, or if you want to lose weight, talk to your health care provider. A registered dietitian or other qualified health professional can give you advice on how to follow a healthy eating plan, lose weight safely and keep it off.
Eating reasonable amounts of natural fats coming from foods like avocados, nuts, and seeds may help you lose more weight by getting you fuller faster and providing the healthy fats your body needs. Joslin Diabetes Center and the Joslin Clinic recommend a diet that provides 40% of total calories from carbohydrate, 30-35% from fat and 20-30% from protein for overweight/obese patients who are at risk for diabetes or who have diabetes. Weight loss for people in these groups is very important for their health yet it can be very difficult for people with diabetes to lose weight. A basic nutritional knowledge tells us that proteins repair and rebuild cells, carbohydrates energize cells and fats provide hormonal foundation for cells. Though the macro-nutrition must remain balanced to maintain optimum health, the calories must cycle to keep the metabolism from slowing down.
All the above are examples of what can affect the way you lose and/or gain weight. No matter what we do in life, the key to your health is nutrition. Please think about the foods you eat and if you can digest them. Whether it is through food and/or supplements, you need to make a decision and follow it through to the end!

How To Find Out If Your Diet Is Healthy Enough

Everyone wants to eat a healthier diet, but it can sometimes be difficult to know if your diet is healthy enough.

There are a number of factors that go into creating a healthy diet, and it is important to evaluate the current state of your diet before embarking on a plan for healthier eating.

There are several questions you should ask yourself when evaluating the healthiness (or lack thereof) of your current eating plan!

Do I eat a wide variety of foods?

Variety is one of the most important hallmarks of a healthy diet, since no one food contains all the nutrients needed by the human body. It is important to eat foods from all the major food groups, including grains and breads, fruits and vegetables, milk and dairy products, meats, beans and nuts.

If you find yourself avoiding some food groups, such as vegetables for instance, it may be time to look for a healthier diet.

Do I recognize the importance of cereals, breads and other grain products?

Eating a wide variety of grain based products is important to a healthy diet. Grains and cereals contain a large number of important nutrients, including high levels of dietary fiber.

It is important to choose whole grain products as often as possible, since whole grain products like wheat bread contain more nutrients than more refined white bread and similar products. When eating cereal, it is a good idea to choose whole grain varieties, or those that are enriched with vitamins and minerals.

Do I eat lots of fruits and vegetables?

Many people do not eat sufficient servings of fruits and vegetables every day. Most experts recommend eating between 5 and 9 servings of fruits and vegetables every day, roughly equivalent to 2 cups of fruit and 2

Finding A Diet That Works

Searching for a new diet that works? If you’re a habitual dieter, wouldn’t it be nice to stop changing diets? Is there a diet that actually works?

Everyone has a habit or a vice. Some people smoke. Some people bite their fingernails. Some people can’t resist having a piece of chocolate before bed time, and others snore when they sleep. Others are habitual dieters, always looking for a new diet that promises astonishing results.

How many new diet plans have you tried? Some people can tick off a list of new diet after diet that they have tried. They yo-yo back and forth. Atkins, weight watchers, the grapefruit diet, the soup diet, the salad diet, the low-fat diet… some people can’t even count every new diet they have tried.

Often, each new diet is punctuated by a day of binge eating. Sure, you lost weight on that latest low-carbohydrate new diet, but now you’re craving a baked potato, French fries, and a big piece of garlic bread. Wouldn’t it be great to find a new diet that allows you to eat all the foods you want while still losing weight?

The bottom line is that the best option isn’t actually a new diet. It’s a concept that has been around for ages, but people fail to overlook it with so many new diet choices on the market. If you talk to most doctors, however, they will agree that fad dieting is not the smartest choice to lose weight.

However bombarded we may be with new diet choices; there is one fact that can’t be ignored. We lose weight when we limit our caloric intake. This isn’t about grapefruit, carbohydrates, fat-free products, or even following a strict new diet plan. It’s about eating in moderation. You don’t have to go hungry, but you need to use willpower to make sure you don’t overeat. Limiting your calories means shedding those unwanted pounds.

What happens when you don’t have willpower? Face it; some of us just don’t have that extra willpower that we need to turn down a second serving of our favorite food. It’s hard to do, especially when your new diet has left you hungry.

Willpower can’t be bottled and sold, but there is a new diet concept that will give you the willpower you need to follow through with your weight loss goals. I’m not talking about appetite suppressants. Many of these products still leave you hungry and leave you feeling jittery or overheated.

If you missed the expose on 60 Minutes or Today show, then you probably haven’t heard about a new vegetable that could jumpstart your diet. This means no more signing on for a new diet every month because you’ll finally have found something that works safely and long term. I’m talking about Hoodia Gordonii. This cactus like plant was introduced to the market recently, but it has been around for centuries. Bushmen in Africa used it for warding off hunger during long expositions.

What does this mean for you today? It means you can limit your calories while not being at all hungry. You’ll feel as if you have already eaten. I know, it sounds almost too good to be true, but it actually works. The best news is that Hoodia is all natural, making it totally safe to incorporate this as a part of your daily diet. Stop stressing over food, the latest new diet, or losing that unwanted weight. Watch those pounds melt off safely and quickly.

The Benefits And Side Effects Of Creatine

What is creatine?

Creatine is an amino acid (amino acids are the building blocks of protein) which is made in the body by the liver and kidneys, and is derived from the diet through meat and animal products. Creatine (creatine monohydrate) is a colorless, crystalline substance used in muscle tissue for the production of phosphocreatine, an important factor in the formation of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the source of energy for muscle contraction and many other functions in the body.

What does creatine normally do in the body?

In the body, creatine is changed into a molecule called “phosphocreatine” which serves as a storage reservoir for quick energy. Phosphocreatine is especially important in tissues such as the voluntary muscles and the nervous system which periodically require large amounts of energy.

Why do athletes take creatine?

Studies have shown that creatine can increase the performance of athletes in activities that require quick bursts of energy, such as sprinting, and can help athletes to recover faster after expending bursts of energy. Creatine is best for the serious bodybuilder. It helps increase muscle mass, rather than muscle endurance, so it’s not well suited for athletes participating in endurance activities. However, the increase in muscle mass may be due to water retention and not an increase in muscle tissue.

Why have I been hearing so much about creatine and neuromuscular disorders?

Two scientific studies have indicated that creatine may be beneficial for neuromuscular disorders. First, a study by MDA-funded researcher M. Flint Beal of Cornell University Medical Center demonstrated that creatine was twice as effective as the prescription drug riluzole in extending the lives of mice with the degenerative neural disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease).

Second, a study by Canadian researchers Mark Tarnopolsky and Joan Martin of McMaster University Medical Center in Ontario found that creatine can cause modest increases in strength in people with a variety of neuromuscular disorders. Beal’s work was published in the March 1999 issue of Nature Neuroscience and the second paper was published in the March 1999 issue of Neurology.

I want to start taking creatine — is it safe?

For the most part, athletes haven’t experienced adverse side-effects from taking creatine, although recently there have been a few reports of kidney damage linked to creatine usage. No consistent toxicity has been reported in studies of creatine supplementation. Dehydration has also been reported to be a problem while taking creatine.

Athletes generally take a “loading dose” of 20 grams of creatine a day for five or six days, then continue with a “maintenance dose” of 2 to 5 grams of creatine a day thereafter.

What are the side effects?

Little is known about long-term side effects of creatine, but no consistent toxicity has been reported in studies of creatine supplementation. In a study of side effects of creatine, diarrhea was the most commonly reported adverse effect of creatine supplementation, followed by muscle cramping.18 Some reports showed that kidney, liver, and blood functions were not affected by short-term higher amounts or long-term lower amounts of creatine supplementation in healthy young adults.

In a small study of people taking 5-30 grams per day, no change in kidney function appeared after up to five years of supplementation. Muscle cramping after creatine supplementation has been anecdotally reported in some studies.

Cholesterol Facts

With all the news and warnings about the dangers of high cholesterol, many people view cholesterol as a “bad” substance that should be eliminated completely from our lives. In truth, cholesterol serves some important functions in the body. In order to understand how cholesterol affects the body, one must first understand what cholesterol is.

Cholesterol is a waxy substance that is attached to the fats in our bloodstream and is present in all of the cells of the body. Cholesterol comes from food that we eat, as well as being manufactured directly by the liver. Cholesterol is an important regulator in the bloodstream, as it helps to regulate the formation of many cells as well as hormones. However, to have too high or too low of a cholesterol count in the blood can be a very dangerous factor, often leading to a heart attack or a stroke. Although cholesterol is prevalent in the blood stream, it cannot dissipate in the blood. The cholesterol maneuvers throughout the body attached to lipids (fats).

There are two main types of cholesterol. The first type is called LDL cholesterol, and the other is HDL cholesterol. LDL cholesterol, otherwise known as low-density lipoprotein, is considered the “dangerous” cholesterol. LDL cholesterol can build up on the artery walls. Over time this plaque build-up blocks blood flow, reducing circulation and causing stress and damage to the heart. This raises blood pressure, and eventually leads to heart disease or a heart attack. Individuals that have higher levels of LDL run a much higher risk of having heart disease. Although LDL is affected by genetics, there are several precautions that individuals can take towards keeping safe LDL levels.

The other form of cholesterol is HDL, or high-density lipoprotein. HDL is considered the “good” cholesterol. HDL cholesterol is important for the body to have as this type of cholesterol helps filter out LDL cholesterol from the lining of the arteries, as well as transporting fat in the bloodstream (triglycerides) to the liver so that it can be excreted from the body. It is believed that even having high levels of HDL is safe, as it can help protect one’s heart from a heart attack or stroke. Low counts of HDL could potentially lead to a heart attack and stroke, however this is rare for people eating a western-style diet, which is typically high in both forms of cholesterol.

Most of the cholesterol in our bodies comes from the foods we eat. Foods high in fats, particularly saturated and trans fats, contribute to high levels of LDL cholesterol. Meat and dairy products are the main sources of LDL cholesterol, while leafy vegetables, fruits, and nuts are more nutritious alternatives that have higher levels of HDL cholesterol. While genetics does play a role in cholesterol levels, a change in diet is the most effective way to lower dangerous cholesterol levels, and reduce your risk of heart disease and associated health problems.

Certain natural substances found in Vasacor, including plant sterols, fish oils, and policosanol have been shown in numerous clinical studies to be highly effective in promoting healthy cholesterol levels, particularly when combined with a healthy diet and exercise. If you are concerned about your cholesterol levels, now is the time to make a change, and Vasacor can help.

Benefits Of Goji Juice

Modernization is wonderful, but there are also other factors in the modern life we live in that may subject our bodies to harm. Understanding what can harm us and what will help us will be our best defense.

Free radicals, our body’s natural enemy subject our body to more than 10,000 hits during a normal day. If our body is not able to combat the harmful effect of free radicals, then it may give us disease and pre-maturely age our body including our skin.

The pristine valleys of Tibet and Mongolia have a solution to this problem.

What do you think is their secret?

Introducing goji juice, made from goji berries grown in the remote and unpolluted hills and valleys of Tibet and Mongolia. Experts who want to save the people who live in this modern society studied what must be wonderful about these Himalayan diets and why do they live so long and free from diseases. Their studies prove that their diet perpetually include goji berries.

Further studies on goji berries prove that they are nutritious and contain vital nutrients necessary to combat free radicals.

Goji juice contains potent vitamins, and minerals like no other berry.

Goji juice also contains 18 amino acids, 8 of which are essential for our bodies, but having all 18 adds to the beneficial characteristic of this wonderful red juice.

Based on studies by numerous health professionals including Dr. Earl Mindell, the author of The Vitamin Bible, goji juice made from goji berries can give your body all the nutrients it needs to help keep a healthy and happy life.

Goji juice aside from the 18 amino acids also has 21 trace minerals, vitamins B1, B2, B6 and Vitamin E. All of these can help give you healthy and active life.

Some of the beneficial effects of drinking goji juice are:

Energy and Strength:
Goji juice is considered as an adaptogen. It increases exercise tolerance, stamina and endurance. Goji juice may also enhance the recovery of ill patients.

Cholesterol level balance:
Goji juice may also help manage your cholesterol level because it contains beta-sitosterol, which can help in your cholesterol level balance. It will also help avoid cholesterol deposit in the blood vessels, thus heart problems may be eliminated.

Normal Kidney Function:
Your kidney is the vital organ that may possibly control the brain and other organs in the body. It is thus essential for better health that you keep your kidneys functioning properly. Goji juice is believed to be helpful in keeping this essential organ functioning properly.

Supports General Health:
As mentioned earlier, free radicals harm our body in many ways. Thus, eliminating this natural enemy will help keep our body strong and avoid illnesses. Goji juice is a potent antioxidant that may keep our body healthy.

Other beneficial factors which may come from goji juice are enhanced sexual function, blood sugar level balance and vision problems.

This is because goji juice contains more beta-carotene even compared to a carrot. The vitamin C contents of goji juice, which is 500 times more in weight than orange, will help keep the immune system functioning properly to avoid illness.

These are only a few of the helpful and beneficial functions of goji juice and because goji juice is safe even for children.

If drinking this sweet and tasty juice excites you well enough, you can also eat goji berries with your food. You can eat them fresh or the dried goji berries are also available. You may use your imagination as to how you can enjoy these wonderful and amazing berries.

7 Reasons To Grow Your Own Organic Vegetable Garden

During the last decades there has been a change towards mechanization and homogenization of farming, which uses pesticides, additives, herbicides, synthetic fertilizers and mass-production techniques. All this is clearly affecting mankind’s health, and new diseases are spreading rapidly amongst humans and animals (bird’s flu being the most recent one).

The World Health Organization produces reports to show how the use of chemicals and other products on food, coupled with the manufacturing processes involved, are actually a threat for our health.

If you have space for a few pots or even a small piece of land, it is a wise decision to grow your own organic vegetable garden. Today I’m presenting you with seven reasons for doing this:

1. You will have no additives in your vegetables. Research by organic food associations has shown that additives in our food can cause heart diseases, osteoporosis, migraines and hyperactivity.

2. There will be no pesticides or synthetic fertilizers used. These chemical products are applied to obtain crops all the time regardless plagues or weather conditions, and affect the quality of the vegetables. Besides, pesticides are usually poisonous to humans.

3. Your vegetables will not be genetically modified (GM). Antibiotics, drugs and hormones are used on vegetables to grow more and larger ones. One of the consequences of this practice are vegetables which look all the same and are usually tasteless. Besides, we end up consuming the hormones that have been used on the vegetables, with the potential risks for our health.

4. Eating your own organic vegetables will be much more healthy for you. They will not contain any of the products or chemicals named above, and they will be much more natural than any ones you would find at the supermarket. Your health will not be at risk because you will then know that nothing has been added to your vegetables.

5. Your own organic vegetables will be much more tasty. The use of pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, hormones and antibiotics make vegetables grow unnaturally and take the taste away from them. With organic vegetables, your cooking will be enhanced as their flavour will show fully.

6. Organic farming is friendly to the environment. Because you won’t use pesticides or other equally harming products on your vegetables, you will not damage the soil or the air with the chemical components.

7. When you grow your own organic vegetables you are contributing to your own self-sustainability and the sustainability of the planet. Small communities have been founded where members exchange products that they grow naturally, thus contributing to create a friendly and better place for us all.

In the end, eating organic products only means that we do not add anything else to them than they would naturally have. As you can guess, additives, fertilizers, pesticides or hormones are not components of naturally grown food. To better care for your health, grown your own organic vegetables -and a few pots is all you need.

The Truth About Exercise and Nutrition

How many times have you heard the expression, "Well I worked out today so I deserve a treat!" In most cases the treats are: Chips, chocolate, pizza, and the list could go on and on. Well what is wrong with that?
There is absolutely nothing wrong with treating yourself, the key is with what? Food and desserts should not be the answer. Treat yourself to a new workout top or something as simple as a plant for the house or a movie to watch with the family.
What people don't understand is a large portion of what you are trying to achieve in the gym comes from what you do outside of the gym. 80% of your results is nutrition, 80%! I hear it all the time, "I want a six-pack", well truth be told, another 15 minutes of abdominal exercises is not going to help. Many people have abdominal muscles deep down under the adipose tissue (FAT). Until you lose the adipose tissue, you will never be able to see the six-pack. It's that simple.
Nutrition not only helps with the way you look, but how your body performs and feels. If you want to stop feeling like crap, than stop eating like it. Provide your body with the proper nutrients, vitamins, and minerals it needs to function to its max. You can not expect your car to continually perform at peak performance if you are always fueling it with low-grade fuel.
WHY IS EATING HEALTHY AND STAYING ON TRACK SO HARD?
The truth of the matter is, it comes down to environment and will power. Society makes it challenging for people to eat healthy and say NO to the smell of fried foods and sugary drinks shared amongst friends and family. Life is about balance. No one is perfect; however, if you have poor eating habits, then you have no right to complain about your lack in weight loss. You are what you eat. There are many tips, food journals and specialty diets out there. It's important to find a system that works best for you and is flexible to your lifestyle. Exercise and nutrition is a grey area. Many people have their opinions about what's right and wrong, however, in my experience, there is NO right and wrong. There is more right and more wrong but it truly comes down to what are your goals? what are you trying to accomplish.
WHAT IS THE BEST DIET?
Tricky question. Again, is there a right and wrong? Is one better than the others? Many articles and studies will persuade you to believe one is the "best" and better than the rest. What do I think? Does it truly matter what I personally think? I am just one person. You probably have already made up your mind on what you think works best, so I'm not going to preach to you regarding which one I think is the best. What I want to ask you is? Can human's live off fat and protein? Can humans live off a vegan diet? Can humans live off a Mediterranean diet? Can humans live off what the Nauru people in the South Pacific eat? The answer is YES! The answer is human beings can ADAPT to their environment. We have the power to change our diets to survive. Do I believe that less carbs is a good option? of course, but it doesn't mean they can't be consumed for survival purposes. The point that I'm trying to get across is that, each and every diet has pros and cons. Balance! Find the balance and the diet that works best for you and your lifestyle. If you are not achieving your health and fitness goals, then consult a professional instead of spending hours and hours confusing yourself about what is the absolute best. Remember, what works for one person does not mean it will work for you. Stop trying to compete with super models and fitness models. There is no problem in trying to achieve your goals but they must be realistic. Adobe photo shop is an amazing thing. Find a diet that works best for you and stick to it! I do not recommend the "junk food" diet. Remember, you still are what you eat.
IS EATING HEALTHY ENOUGH?
Is eating healthy enough? With environmental factors like air and water pollution, there are many toxins in everything we eat and touch. Toxins are found everywhere: from the water we drink, to beauty products, to our nutrient deficient crops, and even the air we breath. Many foods have additives, preservatives and chemicals to help maintain the shelf life of the product. Many of our crops are sprayed with chemicals or are genetically modified. This my not seem important but did you know toxins can cause your body to produce extra fat cells to help protect your inner organs from cancer causing free radicals? It's crucial to rid your body of these toxins to maintain optimal health. You can rid your body of these toxins by nutritional cleansing. Nutritional cleanse can be correlated to changing the oil filter in your car. Your car will run smoothly for many kilometers but eventually you will need to get it changed.
I hope you work hard in the gym, even harder on your diet and remember live is about Balance.
Until next time,

Your Fitness Diet & Health - Nutrition Wellness

You are smart enough to know that your eating habits will contribute to your well being. Many of us lead busy lifestyles and as a result of which look for short cuts to health. This is understandable but not necessarily smart. You need to think outside the box a little, the box being your regular old habits.
When it comes to diet, nutrition is the key factor relative to healthy aging. Nutrients are critical to human health. You essentially need protein, carbs, minerals, oils, fats and vitamins.
When your diet consists of fruits, vegetables and whole grains you reduce the possibility of disease. Good eating habits also help control blood pressure and cholesterol levels. When all of this is in check you will feel and look better. Nutrition is one of the greatest resources we have to fight against disease.
Essentially nutrition is the study of everything related to food which covers anything from food preparation to its consumption. It also covers how the body handles food. This in effect teaches us how our health can be affected by food choices.
On the other hand wellness is not just about how you feel it's more about how you function. Wellness is mainly considered as a holistic concept, holistic in the sense that it covers physical, spiritual, social, emotional, intellectual, and environmental dimensions.
As we know, eating nutritiously and exercising are necessary for a healthy lifestyle, but that is only part of the picture. Wellness therefore is largely determined by the decisions you make and how you live your life.
As a consequence wellness is about looking at the total picture such as blood pressure, body fat, exercise behavior or what you eat on a daily basis. Health and wellness is about balance.
Diet basically refers to what you eat. Often when we hear the term diet we tend to think weight loss, in other words eating less food in order to lose weight. Diet not only refers to food it also refers to liquid. Drinking water is part of your diet.
When it comes to altering your diet as in the amount you eat and what you eat it is always wise to make small incremental changes. This way your chance of success when making these changes is far greater. As we all know what you eat and how much you eat plays a significant role when it comes to weight loss.
Fitness also covers the subject of nutrition. When we refer to fitness it includes good nutrition, flexibility, relaxation, sleep, and more. Fitness is much more than cardio, it is also about strength and resistance training The combination of all of the above adds up to health and wellness because it is all relative and even when we talk about diet for weight loss those who exercise and eat healthy are more likely to succeed for obvious reasons.

Martial Arts Fitness and Healthy Diet Plans For Success

Nutrition plays a major role in the life of a martial artist. You may not realize its true significance until you're in the middle of an intense training session and wonder why after hours, days and weeks of training you don't seem to be improving and feeling any stronger.
Proper nutrition gives the body the nutrients it needs in order to stay healthy and to grow as well as keeping the body hydrated. When your body does not receive the right amount of proper nutrients, it is unable to provide you with the results that you are looking for especially in the areas of strength and speed. In addition to these reasons, you will have lower amounts of energy and training will become more of a struggle then usual.
Knowing the importance food intake has on your training and conditioning, the best way to make sure you are supplying yourself with what you need, is to put yourself on a well thought out nutrition plan. But, what exactly is a nutrition plan for marital artists?
A nutrition plan is a "blueprint" which plans out your meals in advance and takes into consideration the type of training and style that you practice. By coordinating the type of training with well-planned meals, you're able to recognize the types of food that will be most beneficial to you before and after working out so to maximize the effects of the nutrients on your body.
In martial arts, a proper nutrition plan is an integral part of your training. There are three main areas where a nutrition plan will benefit your training sessions. The first area is your health. If your eating habits are "weighing" you down or making you become ill, then a nutrition plan is just what you need to get yourself on track. The thing is, if you're finding yourself frequently sick, you won't be unable to train consistently witch will affect your conditioning and skill level.
The next area where a nutrition plan is beneficial to the martial artist is after a rigorous workout. Difficult workouts are harsh on your body and your muscles go through a process of breaking down in order to rebuild and recover. In order to recuperate and recover quickly, a proper nutrition plan is necessary. And, you will not experience any positive physical results from your workouts and could possibly remain sore for weeks rather than for only a day or two.
The third reason why a nutrition plan is important is because it will enable you to train harder because your body will be "running on" the right nutrients. You will be able to work harder and longer with proper nutrition due to the increase in energy that the nutrients create for your body. Plus, a good plan will help you maintain your physical fitness to a high level.
As you can see, a nutrition plan is necessary tool for every serious practitioner of martial arts. You will become healthier with quality amounts of nutrients running throughout your system and you will experience better results from your training due to a new and properly structured nutrition routine.

Body Weight Exercises and Nutrition

Body Weight Exercises
Body weight exercises are one of the best ways to build muscle and develop strength quickly and effectively. This type of exercise will increase strength in the body's core while not putting on excess mass in the upper body. It's also great to build quality lean muscle mass. Body weight exercises are a useful addition to many strength-gaining programs because they build and condition the body's muscles. These exercises can be done by men, women and children alike, and generally are appropriate for any age.
These are some of the best exercises to include in your workout routine and are completely safe since it's just your body, requiring a minimum of additional equipment. Fitness is essential for your day-to-day effectiveness, even the Marine Corps utilizes body weight exercises to increase the recruits military effectiveness.
Body weight exercises include push-ups, pull-ups, dips, crunches, the one-legged squat, and the knee jump. Push-ups work several muscle groups including the chest, triceps and shoulders. Pull-ups work the upper back, your biceps and abdominal muscles. Dips focus its' work on the triceps, and limited exercise of the chest and back. Crunches and sit-ups work your upper and lower abdominal muscles, while the one-legged squat and knee jump work your legs.
Using a body weight program helps people who are overweight and who have health problems such as Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, and fatigue. Physical fitness can treat and prevent many chronic health conditions that brought on by aging and an unhealthy lifestyle.
Physical Fitness
General physical fitness is achieved by focusing on correct nutrition, exercise, and getting enough rest. Physical fitness and body weight exercises are a necessary requisite for leading a healthy and active life. Thus, your diet should be based on your individual metabolism and what your fitness goals are.
Muscle Building
Muscle building is actually a long-term method which cannot be accomplished overnight. Muscle tissue is tight and dense, which gives it a streamlined look. Muscle is metabolically active, which means it needs a lot of calories just to maintain itself. Nutritionally speaking, protein is essential in building and maintaining muscle mass. Protein is required to build muscle and heal damage done to muscle that may have occurred during your workouts. Muscles are very receptive to the muscle-building effect of protein immediately following a workout.
Protein is found in meat, poultry, fish, dairy products, eggs, nuts, and dried beans, among other foods. Adding a protein supplement to your diet may help your body add muscle mass and cut excess fat.

My Middle Age Nutrition And Fitness Lifestyle Change

People that are middle age should be looking forward to a trend of increased lifespans. However, they are instead living longer lives, with worse health, because of an increase in chronic disease and disability. And this occurs, regardless of a decrease in smoking and lung disease.
What an unfortunate and actually unpredicted situation - we are living longer, but we are less healthy. So, what are some of the reasons for this, and what are some of the things that can be done to keep this from happening to you?
The increased age with worse health dichotomy, has been studied through a large national survey - here are some of the findings, when comparing the current middle age generation, with the previous generation:
  • A decline in reported middle age 'good' health, from 32 percent to only 13 percent currently
  • 39 percent of the current generation are obese, compared to 29 percent previously
  • 16 percent of the current generation has diabetes, compared to 12 percent previously
  • There are also reported increases in bad cholesterol and blood pressure levels
When you see that there has been almost a 150 percent increase in obesity in the current generation, it becomes very logical that they would have worse health and more chronic diseases. Large advances in drugs and the medical field, explains how aging people can still live longer, they just do so with a decrease in the quality of their lives.
Obesity explains and infers so much - if you are that overweight, then:
  • You are continuously increasing the inflammation in your body, which will affect the 'workings' of your immune system, along with being a predecessor for many serious and even fatal diseases.
  • You are continuously increasing the amount of body fat that you are storing, which is actually more dangerous than a high weight alone.
  • You are almost assuredly doing no exercise, spending way too many hours sitting, and are very physically unfit.
Is it any wonder that, even if you are living more years, you are doing so with many chronic health problems?
Middle Age Fitness And Health Transition
Been there-done that - October, 2008 was my major wake-up call.
I was 56 at the time, and living a successful business and family life. But I was also living a very poor nutritional and physical fitness life.
Early in the morning, my heart started racing and wouldn't stop; my wife ended up calling 911. By the time the ambulance got to our house, my heart rate was in the low 200s, and I had an elephant sitting on my chest.
I got to the emergency room, and they had to put my under for cardioversion - and then I got to meet my new cardiologist:
  • I was lucky and had atrial fibrillation, instead of a heart attack
  • I was clinically obese - I was 55 pounds overweight
  • I had 2 arteries that were around 35 percent blocked
  • I was so weak and out of shape that they had to do a chemical stress test, because I couldn't even walk on a treadmill
And then my wife's question - WHAT was I going to do about this?
Let me fast forward to 2013 to answer this question:
  • I weigh 175 with around a 13.5-14 percent body weight percentage - compare to 228 and 20+ percent, when I got sick
  • I have eliminated all processed foods and trans-fats - no more bread, unhealthy desserts, fried foods, and fatty meats
  • I am physically fit, working out most every day - my exercise includes resistance and interval training that is intended to increase my metabolism, and be effective for burning fat -vs- long and slow treadmill walks
I may have no idea how many more years I have to live, but I do know that I am doing everything that I can to make them as healthy as possible.
I have completely turned around my nutritional health and fitness, by making a complete middle age lifestyle change.

Healthy Living, Fitness and Nutrition - The Role of Diet in Health and Fitness

Improving the quality of life through health and nutrition involve following a diet pattern and adequate levels of nutrition to prevent diseases and maintain physical fitness. Issues of malnutrition would be related to deficiencies of vitamins or nutrients and intake of supplements form an important part of disease prevention strategy and helps in improving energy levels (Papers4you.com, 2006). The use of supplements in disease conditions such as high cholesterol levels has been studied to understand the positive and negative impact of dietary supplements on the health of individuals.
For instance, vitamin A deficiency can be a major public health concern and many countries implement strategies to prevent such deficiency cases (Whiting et al, 2006). Vitamin C or ascorbic acid can be detrimental when deficient or in excess and recommended doses of Vitamin C have been given by various countries. Public health authorities across the world encourage individuals to change their health status by adopting new behaviors such as giving up smoking or changing dietary patterns. Apart from vitamins and minerals, fatty acids play an important role in modulation and prevention of diseases. However, maintaining a strict dietary pattern and fitness regimen could be explained with the help of social control and cultural values. Fitness levels are determined with measures on speed, strength and flexibility of athletes or even ordinary individuals and energy costs are directly related to nutrition, diet, exercise and physiology (Papers4you.com, 2006).
In this context the relevance of the gym culture may be studied as the gym going motivation may be similar to the motivation to follow a strict diet pattern and this in turn have an impact on general health and fitness levels (Bull, et al 2006). This is because any kind of rigorous physical exercise brings about thermo regulation that facilitates heat loss and regulates internal body temperature.
One of the important issues in nutrition and health studies would be prevalence of diseases and diet patterns and lifestyle have a direct impact on the health status of individuals. Smoking for instance has been related to lung cancer and heart disease by analyzing data on mortality rates, smoking habits, lung cancer and coronary heart disease and the health benefits of quitting smoking have also been established in several studies (Saijo, 2006).
An important topic of nutrition studies is life expectancy and health and disease in the elderly. The problem of malnutrition is increased during old age as the elderly may have inadequate diet and poor mobility that prevent them from following a recommended diet pattern. In certain cases, poor nutrition can lead to chronic conditions and poor physical mobility and the elderly would thus need specific interventions and effective treatment patterns. General studies on gender variations in life expectancy and illnesses have shown that women tend to live longer than men but also tend to report illnesses more than men (WHO, 2000).

10 Worst Fitness and Nutrition Mistakes

Many workout and fitness plans get derailed by some common mistakes and bad habits.
Be careful to avoid these...
Failing to fuel your body with sound nutrition -- Nutrients are key to the regeneration of muscles. Your body needs protein and vitamins... not excess fat and junk food. Make sure what you take in each meal furthers your fitness goals, rather than hamper them. Go with lean meat, fruits and vegetables over processed and fatty foods. Make sure you eat regularly to keep your metabolism moving and to maintain energy for those workouts. Plan your meals like you plan your workouts if possible. It matters just as much.
Being active only during workouts -- Most of us live sedentary lives. Workouts become harder to stick with when they're the only time you're physically active. Sitting around slows circulation and fat burning, counteracting your workouts. Do more outside the gym. Park the car and walk more. Play sports. Play with your kids or dog. Add hobbies and get out more. Or stay in, clean up the yard or pick up around the house. It's true what they say about bodies in motion -- tend to stay in motion, and that's a good thing.
Drinking sports drinks instead of water -- Sports drinks contain electrolytes. They also contain sugar, and not the good kind. Most sports drinks contain high fructose corn syrup, which sends your liver into overdrive to process the high sugar concentration, storing anything else as fat. Check the labels of sports drinks to avoid the extras that you don't need, and only drink sports drinks when you need them -- they're not meant to quench your everyday thirst. Unless your workout is intense -- and we're talking marathon-intense -- you probably don't need a sports drink. If you need some flavor, try a spritz of lemon or lime. You may also try infusing your water with fruit (berries, pineapple, cucumber, orange, etc) to add flavor but no calories to your drink. Give them a try.
Working out without focus and efficiency -- A good cardio session can take 20 to 30 minutes. Keep in mind that cardio doesn't only mean running, jogging or an exercise machine either. Dancing is a form of cardio also! A good weight workout can take 30 to 45 minutes. That 60-second rest period becomes 3 minutes if you don't watch the clock, making a 30-minute workout last more than an hour. Keep moving throughout the workout to completion. Too long of a rest period can decrease your workout's effectiveness.
Working out without a battle plan -- Some people walk into the gym and wing it -- with no sense of how well they're working out all their muscles, and then wonder why they don't make progress. Write down a workout plan: Map out all your workouts to the set. Figure out your goals and set a plan to get there. Read books for ideas if you must, or take advantage of the trainers the gym makes available. The trainers can advise you on proper form, the right machines for you, the frequency of your workouts and so much more. The cost of one or two sessions is well worth it when you consider the invaluable advice you'll get. Stick to your plan, and keep notes. A good plan allows you to monitor your progress.
Doing incomplete workouts -- Doing cardio alone doesn't develop fat-burning muscle like weights do. Focusing on chest exercises shortchanges other muscles that now have to compensate to balance an overdeveloped chest with your body. You don't have to work out every muscle group every day. Alternate upper and lower body workouts, and mix up heart-strengthening cardio with strength training. Stay balanced, and your body will show the results.
Failing to push yourself-- Pushing your body as reasonably far as possible is the key to making progress. An un-challenging 20-minute cardio session or easy sets don't test your body. Make sure once you start finding sets easy that you increase the weight to continue meeting your goals.
Failing to vary your routine -- Once your body accustoms itself to a routine, your growth slows, this is also referred to as a plateau. A workout strengthens your body by taking you beyond your comfort zone. Change exercises in your workout plan periodically. Switch your cardio from the treadmill to the exercise cycle. Use a barbell instead of dumbbells for those bicep curls. Take a class you've never tried --there's something for everyone offered in most gyms these days. Don't be afraid to take your workouts outside the gym also!
Trying to do too much at once -- Enthusiasm can push you into doing too many sets, lifting too much or running too long. At best, your body's extra soreness hampers future workouts, but injury is the true risk. If you push your body too far, it breaks.
Working out without stretching -- Stretching beforehand prevents muscle cramps and injuries by loosening up your ligaments and muscles. Stretching after workouts loosens up your muscles and ligaments, promoting healing.
You also want to get enough rest between workouts to let your body heal. Your body needs time to repair the damage a workout does. Alternate days of strength training -- do upper body one day, lower the next. This way, you'll be sure to minimize damage. A little soreness is OK. After all, the tiny tears in muscles that result from working out create mass as they're repaired. The most important thing to remember to do after a great workout is to nourish your body with protein, which helps to repair the muscles.
